Build Better Campaigns With the Right Contact List

Standardize Addresses. Reduce Mailing Costs. Improve Deliverability.

Every undeliverable mailpiece costs time, money, and missed opportunities. CASS® (Coding Accuracy Support System) Certification is a USPS® program that evaluates address-matching software and standardizes mailing addresses by correcting formatting, appending ZIP+4® and delivery point codes, and preparing addresses for USPS® automation.

Our CASS® Certification Services help prepare your mailing lists for more accurate, USPS-standardized mailings that improve deliverability, reduce returned mail, and help qualify eligible mail for USPS® automation discounts before your campaign goes out.

“Every dollar you spend on marketing is only as good as the list underneath it. If the data is bad, the campaign is bad.”

— Jared Knapp, Founder of Jared’s Leads

Why Standardizing Mailing Addresses Matters

Every piece of mail you send represents an investment. Our address standardization service helps protect that investment by reducing common mailing issues that increase costs and lower campaign performance.

Common problems caused by inconsistent or inaccurate mailing addresses include:

Standardizing mailing addresses helps improve mail deliverability, supports USPS compliance, reduces mailing costs, and gives your campaigns a stronger foundation for success.

What Is CASS Certification?

It’s a good question. CASS stands for Coding Accuracy Support System, a USPS® program that evaluates address-matching software used to standardize and improve mailing addresses.

Here’s what that looks like on a single address:

Input (what you send us)

Output (what you get back)

CASS vs. DPV vs. NCOA

These three USPS data processes are often confused. Here’s how they differ.

Service

What It Does

What It Doesn’t Do

CASS

Standardizes address formatting and ZIP+4

Doesn’t detect moves

DPV

Verifies that an address can receive mail

Doesn’t standardize formatting

NCOA

Updates addresses for people or businesses that moved

Doesn’t standardize addresses

It doesn’t verify names or people. It also only works within the United States. And it doesn’t outright guarantee delivery. It makes it more likely. CASS Certification requirements like this can save you time and money.

CASS

Correct & Standardize Mailing Addresses

DPV

Verify Deliverability of Addresses

NCOA

Update Addresses When People Move

Purpose

CASS

Corrects, standardizes, and formats mailing addresses to USPS standards.

DPV

Confirms whether an address is deliverable as addressed by the USPS.

NCOA

Provides the new address when a person or business has moved.

What It Does

CASS

DPV

NCOA

Best For

CASS

Improving data quality and ensuring mail is formatted correctly.

DPV

Reducing returned mail and verifying address deliverability.

NCOA

Reaching customers who have moved and maintaining accurate records.

Key Benefit

CASS

Reducing returned mail and verifying address deliverability.

DPV

Lower return rates and better sending efficiency.

NCOA

Maintain connections and recover lost revenue.

It’s not uncommon to mistake these specific terms. However, all three are different USPS data processes. All work to clean, correct, and verify mailing lists. Take a look at the differences in these three types, including CASS Certification vs NCOA and DPV:
USPS CASS Certification is one component of improving deliverability. And it’s becoming more critical than ever.

How Our CASS Certification Process Works

Jared’s Leads simplifies the entire process for you. CASS address validation takes just four simple steps:

Step 01

Upload your list

Upload your mailing list to Jared’s Leads in a few clicks. A data specialist reviews your file before processing begins.

Step 02

USPS CASS processing happens

This quick process moves through your list efficiently.

Step 03

Addresses are standardized

The necessary changes take place. This process updates your mailing list to reflect accurate formatting.

Step 04

Receive your file

Send your list as a CSV, XLS, or text file. Standard turnaround is 48 hours from receipt. What you receive after processing includes an updated file with standardized addresses, ZIP+4® updates, and a summary report showing what changed.

Some addresses can’t be standardized, usually because they don’t match a valid USPS delivery point. Your specialist walks you through those so you know exactly what didn’t match and why, instead of guessing at an error code.

CASS-certified address validation isn’t complex. It’s direct and efficient, keeping your campaign on track.

Benefits of CASS Certification

CASS Certification provides several potential outcomes, including:
Address correction service enhances the effectiveness of campaigns. Use a USPS address correction service like this to minimize complications moving forward. Improve mail deliverability to achieve your objectives.

How Often Should You Run CASS Certification?

Before every mailing. That’s the short answer, and it’s what most mailers do.

If you need a firm outer limit, USPS requires addresses mailed at commercial prices to be verified and corrected within 6 months of your mail date. CASS processing is an approved method for meeting that standard. Beyond that window, your list no longer qualifies.

The reason there’s no single expiration date is that certification is tied to the USPS address database, not the calendar. As of October 2022:

Mail quarterly? Reprocess quarterly. Mail monthly? Reprocess monthly. Send us your list and we’ll tell you whether your current file is still within its window.

Who Uses CASS Certification?

It’s universally beneficial. Some of the most common customers of these services include:
CASS USPS provides peace of mind. CASS address validation helps any organization sending mail improve the chances of it being delivered on time. CASS certified address validation makes sense.
“If you’re not actively maintaining your data, you’re not marketing to your audience. You’re marketing to whoever they used to be.”

No. CASS certification standardizes and corrects mailing addresses according to USPS® standards and appends ZIP+4® and other postal coding. It does not update addresses for people who have moved (that's NCOA® processing) or confirm whether an address is currently deliverable (that's DPV®). Many organizations use CASS®, DPV®, and NCOA® together to improve mailing accuracy.
